Sonic branding for a book cover

This project required the creation of an animated 10 second clip with sound in After Effects and could be used to promote anything we liked. I chose a cookbook by the Country Women’s Association that depicted a more familiar and comforting scene in the style of the animation seen on lo-fi music stations, where the emphasis is on small animations instead of grandiose gestures.

I did not want to closely copy the art style of the cover’s illustrator, Julia Cornelius, so I changed up the composition and left the text off the containers entirely. The first draft of the starting image, created in Illustrator and pre-composed in Photoshop, below.

For sounds, I wanted to continue the comforting theme, so I recorded myself humming ‘Fly Me to the Moon’, a song made popular by Frank Sinatra in 1964 and therefore well known. Additional sound effects in the form of a sizzling frying pan and a fridge door opening and closing were sourced from the BBC Sound Effects library.

In After Effects, numerous subtle touches were applied to contribute to the lo-fi effect mentioned above, and involved extensive uses of masks. These effects include steam rising behind the title; a shadow passing over the utensil jar; freeform scribbles appearing over the yellow jar and the mint leaves wriggling.
